Can you imagine your life without a phone, TV, Netflix, or even Google Maps? One of our creative designers recently gave it a try. Here’s what she had to say…

the thought of not having the safety net of my mobile left me feeling slightly anxious.

This summer I embarked on a digital detox through a newly founded company called Unplugged. Isolated in a log cabin in the middle of fields & woodland (somewhere in West Sussex!), we were presented with a lock box for our phones and encouraged to use only the map, compass, and polaroid camera provided during our 3-day retreat.

Would I be lying if I said I wasn’t apprehensive at first? 100%! The thought of not having the safety net of my mobile phone left me feeling slightly anxious, but this soon disappeared from the back of my mind.

As time went by, I began to re-focus my attention on with what was going on around me – little things like the different sounds of the birds in the morning, the number of satellites that cross the sky at night, and how peaceful it is living in pure countryside! Time seemed to slow down. I had the hours free to read books, explore local walks, and enjoy old-school board games. My mind was completely relaxed.

Switching off from the outside world (and my phone) was exactly what I needed without even knowing it – everyone needs to experience this type of detox at least once in their life!

As a generation, we’re so easily distracted by notifications, emails, and work – but it’s so important to properly take the time away from screens to recharge. When I returned to work after the retreat, I found myself less stressed and with more ability to focus, both of which helped me stay productive. My time away from screens had strengthened my ability to concentrate on the one in front of me when I was back at the job.

So next time you’re away for a short break, maybe consider switching off your phone, confiscate the TV, and go back to basics with a map & compass. You’ll be surprised just how much you needed it!
